Here's My List of the Best Travel Apps

Finding the best travel apps isn’t something I take lightly. I’ve spent more late nights than I’d care to admit scouring through app stores, reading countless reviews, and putting these tools to the test on my own globetrotting adventures.

When I recommend something, it’s because it’s passed my personal “would I really use this?” test. I’ve tinkered with these apps in airports, on trains, and in cozy little cafés halfway across the world, and only the ones that truly wowed me earned a spot on this list.

Why is this so important to me? Because I’m not just tossing out random suggestions—I’m sharing the tools that I believe will help you manifest a smoother, more exciting, and less stressful journey.

So, without further ado, here are the travel apps that I’m confident will make your next adventure your best one yet. They're categorized for easy browsing.

Travel Planning and Organization

TripIt

TripIt is a reliable travel organization app that automatically creates detailed itineraries by pulling information from your confirmation emails. With a clean interface and flawless import of travel details, it’s been a go-to on many trips.

The free app version offers plenty of functionality, though the Pro version adds perks like real-time flight alerts and cancellation notifications. While it excels at organizing flights, accommodations, and rental cars, it’s not designed for planning activities once you’ve reached your destination.

Wanderlog

Wanderlog organizes your itineraries but also allows you to store activities and places to visit, complete with maps.

While some imports, particularly PDFs, don’t always come through perfectly, the app shines in helping you track your trip spending by automatically pulling in expenses from forwarded emails. It’s ideal for those who want to plan their entire trip in one place, from accommodations to sightseeing.

The free version covers the basics, but if you’re looking to unlock all the features, the Pro version might be worth considering—though it would be even better if they offered a monthly subscription option..

Navigation and Maps

Google Maps for Apple Store or Google Maps for Play Store

One that most of us are probably familiar with but it wouldn't be a complete list if I didn't add it.

Google Maps is the ultimate navigation tool that goes beyond just getting you from Point A to Point B. With real-time traffic updates, public transit routes, and even restaurant recommendations, it’s like having a local guide in your pocket. You can use it along with Google Flights to find the best deals for your trip.

The #1 benefit? It’s got to be the sheer reliability. Whether you’re exploring a bustling city or wandering through a quiet village, Google Maps ensures you never feel lost. This travel guidance access millions of users daily, making it one of the best apps to guide other travelers.

One time, I found myself in a maze of narrow streets in a small Italian town, desperately trying to find a family-owned gelato shop everyone raved about. Google Maps not only led me right to it but also pointed out a charming little bookshop along the way. That unexpected detour ended up being one of my favorite discoveries of the trip.

Citymapper

From staying in a charming cottage in the countryside to booking a chic apartment in the heart of the city, Airbnb offers a wide range of options that allow you to truly live like a local during your travels. You can also check vacation packages if you’re not a fan of DIY trips.

What I appreciate most about when I've stayed at Airbnbs is how it felt like a home away from home. The host had left personal touches like local snacks and a guide to the best hidden spots in the area. The experience made my trip feel more authentic and connected to the local culture.

Vrbo

Vrbo specializes in vacation rentals by owners, offering a range of homes, cabins, and condos perfect for family vacations or group getaways. With the ability to book entire homes, Vrbo provides the comfort and amenities of a home away from home, whether you’re seeking a beachfront villa or a cozy mountain cabin.

Hostelworld

Hostelworld is ideal for budget travelers and backpackers looking to book hostels and communal accommodations. The app’s focus on community, with many hostels offering activities and communal spaces, makes it more than just a place to reset—it’s a gateway to connecting with fellow travelers and making new friends.
